“Every character looks like a mob”: ‘The Beginning After the End’ Is Going from Basic to Downright Boring

Watching the latest episode of The Beginning After the End is akin to melting one’s own brain voluntarily. The summary of the entire episode is that Arthur is back with his parents, and everyone is delighted about it. And that’s it. That’s the whole episode.

There was absolutely no plot progression, and even the action scenes were boring. When the anime first debuted, it was a bit basic, but it looks like fans had no idea of how deep the bull***t actually runs.

The Beginning After the End has waged a full-scale war on plot and animation

At first, the issue was the animation, and now, after more than half the episodes are out, fans have lost track of which issue they should rightfully be angry about. The latest episode of the anime made it evident that the studio simply did not care about the series. The pacing of the series has just made things worse.

As mentioned before, episode 8 of the anime contributed virtually nothing to the plot. Arthur is back with his parents, and that is the summary of the entire 20-something-minute episode. After reuniting, he learnt of his new sister, who is more of an NPC than a real character. He also lied to his parents about everything, then proceeded to meet his father’s boss and his family, who also look like copy-pasted characters with different hair and eye colors and in different clothing.

The characters don’t even have many expressions to begin with. They can either blush or express shock, or talk. The differences between their expressions are minimal. Additionally, Arthur’s battle with his father was truly soul sucking. Everyone knew who would win, and exactly zero people were surprised. Well, at least the episode hinted at what Arthur would be doing next.

TBATE‘s lazy animation has no limits

TBATE‘s animation has been compared to a slideshow before, but that’s unfair to slideshows. It takes a lot of time to make good slideshows, and TBATE isn’t one of them. Every other frame in the episode is a still frame with only the mouths of the characters moving.

One might expect the animation to get better in battle scenes, but that’s just a wrong assumption because it gets worse in fight scenes. Arthur’s battle with his father was proof that webtoon panels can just be stitched together to make an anime. An excess of speed lines and a lack of actual movement are jarring. There are too many effects involved and basically no choreography.

So far, the anime has been outsourced to different studios for each episode, and it’s visible that different teams have had to work on it. This has been Studio A-Cat’s strategy all along because they never really had a proper 2d animation department to begin with. At the end of the day, TBATE might be just another generic isekai webtoon, but it deserves better than this mess.

The Beginning After the End anime is currently available to stream on Crunchyroll.
