Naruto Live Action Movie Release Timeline Status: Everything We Know

As of August 15, 2025, the long-awaited live-action adaptation of Naruto remains in pre-production hell, with no confirmed release date in sight, despite having a complete script. Naruto fans have been excited about the project, and the announcement about Destin Daniel Cretton being at the project’s helm got everyone buzzing once again. The progress, however, has been glacial.

The silence and lack of updates have caused many to question if it’ll ever materialize at all. Despite this, however, fans continue to scour the web for updates, and a few have even come up with their fancasts for the project. Let us take a look at all the setbacks and fan casts, with bonus insights from the legend, Masashi Kishimoto, himself.

Let us be honest. There aren’t a whole lot of updates we can share about the Naruto live-action project, because its momentum has largely remained slow. Perhaps the most pressing update we can offer to you about the project is that its script has been drafted. That’s right, folks, the script for the Naruto live-action movie has been drafted, and we have screenwriter Tasha Huo of The Mighty Nein fame to thank for this.

She stated that she was confident in her script and revealed a few details about its nature, which got the fans excited. She stated clearly that she wanted the adaptation to avoid becoming another 2017 Death Note, and as such, tried to stay true to Kishimoto’s vision.

She stated that the script “comes from a love of who Naruto is” (via Tasha Huo’s interview with Entertainment Weekly). We’re happy to see such dedication from her, and are sure that the script is amazing.

This, however, is the last major update about the project. As of mid-2025, the studio has made no casting announcements. No filming dates have emerged, and this, apparently, is due to Cretton, who is currently working on the Spider-Man movie. Since the movie can’t be shot without its director, we’ll have to wait for Cretton to wrap up his other project.

Given this rough history of live-action projects and the lack of concrete updates, Naruto fans around the world are worried about the project. This worry, however, hasn’t stopped them from continuing the Naruto franchise’s legacy by coming up with AI posters, fan trailers, and fan casting. These fan casting choices have given us a look into their expectations.

Who Fans Want in a Naruto Live-Action Movie

The delay in production and the lack of updates have only served to excite fans even more. Dedicated fans have started fan-casting their favorite actors for specific roles, with Tom Holland topping the list as the fan-cast for Naruto Uzumaki. The talented actor is accompanied by Ryusei Yokohoma, who, according to fans, will be perfect for playing Sasuke (from which arc, though?).

A few users have also looked into younger talents and have suggested Aidan Gallagher for Sasuke’s role, and we can’t help but agree. A few more fans want to see Aoi Miyazaki as Hinato Hyuuga, Topher Grace as Kakashi Hatake (this one was surprising), and Sydney Sweeney as Tsunade.

What Masashi Kishimoto Has Said About the Project

When an anime or a manga is set to receive an anime adaptation, it is only natural that people would want to know what its creator thinks of the project. In the case of Naruto‘s live-action project, mangaka Masashi Kishimoto has been optimistic. He has, apparently, read the script and blessed the team.

He also came forward to speak about Cretton (post via movieweb/Instagram) and had the following to say,

I found him to be an open-minded director who was willing to embrace my input, and felt strongly that we would be able to cooperate together in the production process.

Now that’s an honor you only receive once in your lifetime. It is great to know that Kishimoto-san is so confident about the project.

The Naruto live-action movie is full of promise, but its glacial development is frustrating. The project, thanks to Cretton’s prior involvement, may not arrive till 2027. All we can do in the meantime is look at the fan posters and wonder about the film’s premise. Are you excited for the Naruto live-action?

Naruto and Naruto: Shippuden are currently available to stream on Crunchyroll.
