The Case Study of Vanitas: Who are Vanitas and Noe?

Who doesn’t like gorgeous fictional characters? What if their beauty is paired with an interesting characterization? If that sounds appealing, The Case Study of Vanitas is a treasure trove for you. It’s not like there’s a need for anything more to be said, but these characters are also vampires, at least one of them is! Nobody can swipe left on that combination.

Beyond these characters, The Case Study of Vanitas offers a great mix of stunning visuals, a memorable soundtrack, and complex themes. It’s a vampire anime, and as great as it is in most aspects, it’s the characters that keep you hooked to the narrative! So, who are these characters and what makes them so appealing?

Vanitas is a charmer with a noble goal in The Case Study of Vanitas

Vanitas and Noe are the central duo of The Case Study of Vanitas, and both of them team up for their individual goals. Vanitas is the owner of the Book of Vanitas, which is the central focus of Noe’s goal. Their journey together leads to mysteries that allow the plot to explore many complex and dark themes.

The stunning animation and action scenes are the brownie points that make the anime a joy (and a mix of different emotions) to sit through. Now, Vanitas is a human who hates everything and everyone. He’s cunning, brash, but also a talker and a charmer. He’s the kind of person people hesitate around.

Everyone knows better than to trust him because Vanitas gives off the impression that he’d do anything for his own gains. And none of that is intended with malicious intent.

Contrary to his personality that screams chaos, Vanitas has a noble goal and aspires to save vampires with the Book of Vanitas. He is a doctor who cures Vampires, and that’s what he’s doing for the most part in the story.

Beyond his generally fun exterior, he’s vulnerable and cautious of any intimacy with others. His fears make him complex and a subject of intrigue. He fits the same archetype as Dazai, Gojo, and other playful characters, who are trouble but also endearing and appealing.

Earnestness is Noe’s middle name, and he is committed to his values

For those who hate the confident but vulnerable anime characters, Noe is the perfect alternative. He’s sincere, straightforward, and a vampire! If ‘benefit of the doubt’ were a person, it would probably be Noe, except there would be no doubt if it’s him. He is too trusting, but somehow Vanitas brings out the skepticism in him.

The partnership with Vanitas isn’t something he’s pleased with, yet he does it anyway. The reason behind that is his relationship with his master, who wanted him to carry out research on the Book of Vanitas.

Noe had a rough past, but he shares a good relationship with the family he found along the way. He’s generally grateful towards people and tries to see the best in them.

Both these characters have contradicting personalities, and it’s a joy to see them interact. Their past, their fears, and the multiple layers to their characterization are interesting to witness.

It must be mentioned that the complex circumstances also show us new sides of these characters, which is something you need to experience firsthand. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to experience vampires firsthand?

The Case Study of Vanitas is currently available to stream on Crunchyroll.
