With 2026 starting, the fans of the anime verse are filled with excitement with all that the new year will bring for them. Crunchyroll’s newly launched anime series, Sentenced to Be a Hero, is one of the big reasons for their excitement. It’s essentially the story of a hero, something we saw in My Hero Academia, but with an intriguing twist.
Unlike how MHA offers a more glorified and celebrated version of the term “Hero,” the other series does the exact polar opposite for the term and concept, and narrates it in a very dark and suffering tone.
What Is Sentenced to Be a Hero About?
Studio Kai’s Sentenced to Be a Hero is an anime adaptation of the manga and light novel series written by Rocket Shokai, titled Sentenced to Be a Hero: The Prison Records of Penal Hero Unit 9004. The anime follows the story of Xylo Forbartz, a former knight commander who’s been convicted of killing a goddess. In place of his execution, Xylo receives a hero sentence, binding him to a brutal system that treats heroes as disposable assets rather than saviors.
Xylo is repeatedly dispatched to the front lines as the leader of Penal Hero Unit 9004 in the endless war against the demon lords, as he is a disposable asset for them. The heroes are frequently killed in battle and resurrected, allowing them to be redeployed endlessly as expendable weapons. To take revenge on those who set him up and break the cycle of death, Xylo makes a pact with Teoritta, a mysterious sword goddess, and starts a rebellion against their captors.
Why Sentenced to Be a Hero Is MHA’s Perfect Antithesis

Where the highly iconic and famous My Hero Academia by Kohei Horikoshi glorifies the concept of heroes and their role in society, Sentenced to Be a Hero undermines that idea. In the new 2026 Crunchyroll anime, there is no respect for the term hero; it’s just that they are expendable people who are just used as a tool for military purposes.
The MHA series has always carried the concept that heroes are great and people should aspire to become one, even till the very last episode, receiving commendable appreciation from the fans. However, Sentenced to Be a Hero carries the exact opposite message and rather discourages people from being heroes, with its outlook on the whole concept being just another tool for the higher-ups to be used against human will.
While both series have a core concept of heroism, they are completely polar opposite to each other in how they carry the term – one positively, one negatively.
Sentenced to Be a Hero Power System Marks the End of Old Shonen

If we pick up some of the classic old shonen anime titles like Dragon Ball, Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece, they all somewhat share a similar concept when it comes to defining the power system. While the narratives are vastly different, the cores are very similar.
Power is earned with intense training, effort, or inherited destiny.
Strength equates to freedom of a person – the stronger they are, the more choices they have.
Even if the narrative pushes against it, Heroism in all the classic shonen series is chosen,
Power growth has several layers of development to it; there’s always one stage after another.
However, the Sentenced to Be a Hero anime series breaks all the monotony of the classic shonen formula with its uniquely written narrative choices. Heroism in the anime is not chosen or destined; it is assigned. No one is special in this anime just because they are a hero, but rather are drafted and punished by being given the title. Furthermore, Strength is not a liberating factor, but rather a constraint.
